Raag Asavari is the foundational melody of the Asavari Thhat, characterized by its deeply contemplative and somber nature. It utilizes Komal Gandhar (g), Komal Dhaivat (d), and Komal Nishad (n) while the remaining notes are Shuddha. In its ascending structure (Aaroh), Gandhar and Nishad are strictly omitted, giving it an Audav jati in ascent, while the descent (Avroh) includes all seven notes, making it Sampurna. The Vadi swar is Komal Dhaivat, and the Samavadi is Komal Gandhar. The performance of this Raag typically evokes feelings of renunciation, deep devotion, and a touch of melancholy (Karuna Rasa). Its characteristic phrasing involves a specific 'Andolan' on the Komal Dhaivat, which distinguishes it from related melodies like Raag Jaunpuri. It is traditionally performed during the second prahar of the morning, capturing a sense of spiritual yearning and peace.
