Raag Bahar is a captivating seasonal raga of Hindustani Classical Music, traditionally associated with the arrival of the spring season (Vasant Ritu). Belonging to the Kafi Thhat, it is characterized by its vibrant, joyful, and somewhat 'Chanchal' (restless/playful) nature. The raga employs both Shuddha and Komal Nishad, which adds a distinct charm to its melodic structure. Its Vadi swar is Madhyam (Ma) and Samvadi is Shadaj (Sa). While it is traditionally assigned to the midnight hours, it is permissible to perform this Raag at any time during the spring season. The movements of Bahar are often intricate and zig-zag (Vakra), frequently utilizing the signature phrase 'Ma Pa Ga Ma' to establish its unique identity. It beautifully captures the essence of blossoming flowers and the revitalization of nature.
