Bilaskhani Todi

Raag Bilaskhani Todi is a profoundly emotive and melancholic raga belonging to the Bhairavi Thhat. Legend attributes its creation to Bilas Khan, the son of the legendary Miyan Tansen; it is said he sang this raga in deep grief at his father's funeral, which moved the deceased's hand in blessing. Although it shares the scale of Bhairavi (utilizing Komal Re, Ga, Dha, and Ni), its treatment is distinctly different, emphasizing the Todi character through specific phrasing. It is an Audav-Sampurna raga, where Madhyam and Nishad are omitted in the ascent. The raga is renowned for its 'Karuna Rasa' (pathos) and 'Vairagya' (detachment), making it one of the most spiritually resonant ragas in Indian Classical Music. It is traditionally performed during the late morning hours, using heavy 'meends' (glides) to evoke a sense of longing.
