Raag Desh is one of the most popular and melodious Ragas in Hindustani Classical Music, belonging to the Khamaj Thhat. It is primarily a seasonal Raga associated with the monsoon (Varsha Ritu), though it is traditionally performed during the second prahar of the night. The Raga follows an Audav-Sampurna structure, omitting Gandhar and Dhaivat in the ascent while using all seven notes in the descent. A distinguishing feature of Desh is the use of Shuddha Nishad in the Aaroh and Komal Nishad in the Avroh. Known for its emotive and hauntingly beautiful character, it is widely used in semi-classical genres like Thumri, Dadra, and Bhajans. It holds a special place in Indian culture as the melody for the national song 'Vande Mataram', evoking feelings of patriotism, devotion, and romantic longing.
