Raag Deshkar is a vibrant morning melody belonging to the Bilawal Thhat. It is an Audav-Audav Jati Raag, meaning it utilizes five notes in both its ascending (Aaroh) and descending (Avroh) structures, strictly omitting the Madhyam (Ma) and Nishad (Ni) swars. While it shares the same scale as Raag Bhupali, Deshkar is distinguished by its emphasis on the Dhaivat (Dha) as the Vadi and Gandhar (Ga) as the Samavadi. Unlike the serene and contemplative nature of Bhupali, Deshkar is characterized by its 'Chanchal' (lively) nature and its movement predominantly in the Uttaranga (upper part of the octave). It is traditionally performed during the second prahar of the day. The Raag evokes feelings of joy, energy, and devotion, making it a popular choice for fast-paced compositions and vibrant Khayals.
