Raag Gorakh Kalyan is an evocative and melodious Raag belonging to the Khamaj Thhat. Despite its name, it does not share the characteristics of the Kalyan family, as it uses Shuddha Madhyam instead of Teevra Madhyam and features Komal Nishad. It is typically classified as an Audav-Shadav Jati Raag, completely omitting the notes Gandhar (Ga) and Pancham (Pa) in ascending and Gandhar (Ga) descending scales. The Raag is renowned for its hauntingly beautiful and serene atmosphere, often creating a sense of deep yearning or spiritual devotion. Its structure relies heavily on the graceful transitions between Madhyam, Rishabh, and Dhaivat. Traditionally performed during the second prahar of the night, Gorakh Kalyan provides a meditative experience that resonates with emotional depth and tranquility, making it a favorite for both vocal and instrumental performances.
