Raag Jaunpuri is a beautiful and melodic late-morning Raag belonging to the Asavari Thhat. It is widely believed to have been composed or popularized by Sultan Hussain Sharqi of Jaunpur, from which it derives its name. Though it shares a close resemblance to Raag Asavari, it is distinguished by the inclusion of Nishad in its ascending structure, whereas Asavari typically omits it. The Raag utilizes Komal Gandhar, Komal Dhaivat, and Komal Nishad, with the note Gandhar being forbidden (Varjit) in the ascent (Aaroh). The Vadi swar is Komal Dhaivat and the Samavadi is Komal Gandhar. Known for its ability to evoke deep devotion and a touch of melancholy, Raag Jaunpuri is a versatile Raag frequently used in Khayal, semi-classical Bhajans, and even popular film music due to its accessible yet profound emotional depth.
