Raag Kalavati is a highly melodic and enchanting Raag in Hindustani Classical music, belonging to the Khamaj Thhat. Characterized by its Audav-Audav Jati, it completely omits the notes Rishabh (Re) and Madhyam (Ma) in both its ascending and descending structures. The Raag uses Shuddha Gandhar, Pancham, Dhaivat, and Komal Nishad, creating a scale that is exceptionally pleasing and often compared to the Carnatic Raga Valachi. While it is rooted in the Khamaj scale, its performance excludes the Shuddha Nishad entirely. Kalavati is known for its emotive versatility, making it a popular choice for both classical khayals and light classical forms like Bhajans and Thumris. It is traditionally performed during the second prahar of the night, evoking a sense of beauty, longing, and spiritual devotion.
