Raag Kalingda is a beautiful morning Raag belonging to the Bhairav Thhat. While it shares the same scale as Raag Bhairav—utilizing Komal Rishabh (Re) and Komal Dhaivat (Dha) with Shuddha Madhyam (Ma) and Shuddha Nishad (Ni)—its character is distinctly different. Unlike the somber and meditative Bhairav, Kalingda possesses a more 'Chanchal' or lively nature. It avoids the heavy oscillations (andolans) on Re and Dha that are characteristic of Bhairav, focusing instead on a more straightforward melodic movement. This Raag is highly popular in semi-classical music, particularly in Bhajans and Thumris, due to its sweet and accessible melody. It is typically performed during the first prahar of the morning, evoking a sense of peaceful devotion mixed with a light, pleasing grace.
