Raag Kedar is a majestic and highly revered raga in Hindustani Classical Music, belonging to the Kalyan Thhat. Named after Lord Shiva (Kedarnath), it is known for its complex, 'vakra' (crooked) melodic structure and profound emotional depth. The raga is characterized by the prominent use of Shuddha Madhyam, which serves as the Vadi swar, and a signature jump from Shadja to Shuddha Madhyam (S-M). While it utilizes both forms of Madhyam, the Teevra Madhyam is used subtly in specific phrases. Rishabh and Gandhar are typically omitted in the ascent (Aaroh), giving it a unique character. Traditionally performed during the first quarter of the night, Raag Kedar evokes a sense of peace, divinity, and aesthetic beauty. Its intricate movements require a high level of skill to maintain the raga's purity and distinct identity.
