Raag Khamaj is one of the most popular and versatile ragas in Hindustani Classical Music, serving as the namesake for its parent Thhat. It is famously characterized by the use of Shuddha Nishad in the Aaroh (ascent) and Komal Nishad in the Avroh (descent). The raga traditionally omits the note Rishabh (Re) in its ascending structure, giving it a Shadav-Sampurna jati. With Gandhar (Ga) as the Vadi and Nishad (Ni) as the Samavadi, Khamaj exudes a bright, sweet, and somewhat playful character. It is exceptionally well-suited for semi-classical genres such as Thumri, Tappa, and Dadra, where it beautifully expresses themes of Shringar (romance) and Viraha (longing). Typically performed during the second prahar of the night, its melodic movements create an atmosphere of intimacy and emotional depth.
