Raag Malkauns is one of the oldest and most profound Raags in Indian Classical Music, belonging to the Bhairavi Thhat. It is a pentatonic Raag, characterized by the complete omission of the notes Rishabh (Re) and Pancham (Pa) in both ascending and descending scales. The structure relies on the Komal (flat) versions of Gandhar, Dhaivat, and Nishad. Historically significant, legend suggests it was created by Goddess Parvati to calm Lord Shiva. It is known for its serious, meditative, and 'Gambhir' nature, making it a favorite for late-night performances. The Raag is typically rendered in the lower (Mandra) and middle (Madhya) octaves, using heavy glides (Meend) and slow movements to evoke a sense of spiritual depth. Its Vadi swar is Madhyam, which gives it a distinct, stable, and peaceful character.
