Raag Nand, also popularly known as Anandi Kalyan, is a highly sophisticated and melodic raga belonging to the Kalyan Thhat. It is characterized by its 'Vakra' (crooked) nature, meaning the notes are not rendered in a straight linear sequence but in intricate, winding patterns. This raga is a beautiful blend of elements from Raga Kalyan and Bilawal, often featuring the distinct phrase 'Sa-Ga-Ma-Pa'. The Vadi swar is Shadaj (Sa) and the Samvadi is Pancham (Pa). Its structure utilizes both Shuddha and Teevra Madhyam, though the Shuddha Madhyam is more prominent in its signature phrases. Due to its complex movements, it requires a high degree of skill to perform without drifting into similar ragas like Hamir or Kamod. Traditionally sung during the second prahar of the night, Raag Nand evokes a mood of deep devotion, elegance, and aesthetic joy.
