Raag Patdeep is a soulful and enchanting late afternoon Raag belonging to the Kafi Thhat. It is widely considered a derivative or a 'cousin' of Raag Bhimpalasi, with the primary distinction being the use of Shuddha Nishad (N) instead of Komal Nishad (n). The Raag employs Komal Gandhar (g), while all other notes are Shuddha. Its structure is Audav-Sampurna, as it omits Rishabh (R) and Dhaivat (D) in the ascent (Aaroh) but includes all seven notes in the descent (Avroh). The melodic movement of Patdeep is characterized by its deep, resonant nature and its ability to evoke a sense of poignant longing and emotional depth. Often performed in the third prahar of the day, it is a favorite for both vocal Khyals and instrumental Gat-toda, offering a perfect canvas for exploring themes of separation and devotion.
