Puriya Kalyan

Raag Puriya Kalyan is a magnificent 'Jod' or compound Raag that beautifully blends the characteristic elements of Raag Puriya and Raag Kalyan. Classified under the Marwa Thhat, it employs all seven notes, featuring Komal Rishabh (r) and Teevra Madhyam (M'). The inclusion of Pancham (Pa) is what distinguishes it from the pentatonic/hexatonic nature of Puriya, bringing in the sturdy 'Kalyan' influence. This Raag is a late evening melody, typically performed during the transition from twilight to the first quarter of the night. Its structure is deeply contemplative and grand, requiring a high level of mastery to balance the two constituent Raags. The Vadi swar is Gandhar (Ga) and the Samavadi is Nishad (Ni).
