Shudh Sarang

Raag Shudh Sarang is a highly celebrated afternoon melody belonging to the Sarang family. It is distinguished by its unique use of both Madhyams—Shuddha and Teevra—which sets it apart from other Sarang variants. While it is technically classified under the Kalyan Thhat, it exhibits characteristics of Kalyan due to the prominent Teevra Madhyam. The Raag strictly forbids the use of Gandhar (Ga) in both ascending and descending movements. The Dhaivath (Dha) is also omitted in the Aaroh, giving it an Audav-Shadav structure. The combination of Shuddha Nishad and the interplay between the two Madhyams creates a bright, shimmering atmosphere that perfectly captures the essence of the midday sun. It is a Raag that requires great skill to maintain its purity, often characterized by graceful glides (Meends) from Madhyam to Rishabh.
