Raag Tilang is an enchanting and melodic Raga belonging to the Khamaj Thhat. It is characterized by its Audav-Audav Jati, meaning it uses five notes in both ascending (Aaroh) and descending (Avroh) structures, completely omitting Rishabh (Re) and Dhaivat (Dha). A unique and defining feature of Tilang is the use of both Nishads: Shuddha Nishad is used in the Aaroh, while Komal Nishad is employed in the Avroh. This Raga is known for its 'Chanchal' or playful nature and is frequently utilized in light classical genres such as Thumri, Dadra, and Ghazals. Its Vadi Swar is Gandhar (Ga) and the Samvadi Swar is Nishad (Ni). Performed during the second prahar of the night, it evokes deep sentiments of Shringar (romance) and Bhakti (devotion), making it a popular choice for expressing emotional longing and spiritual grace.
