Raag Yaman, also known as Raag Kalyan, is one of the most fundamental and majestic ragas in Hindustani Classical Music. Belonging to the Kalyan Thhat, it is distinguished by the use of Teevra Madhyam (sharp fourth), while all other notes are Shuddh (natural). It is traditionally the first raga taught to students due to its clear structure and melodic expanse. Typically performed during the first quarter of the night, Yaman creates an atmosphere of serenity, devotion, and grace. The raga is often initiated from the lower octave Nishad, highlighting the movement 'Ni-Re-Ga'. As a 'Sampurna-Sampurna' raga, it utilizes all seven notes in both its ascending and descending scales. Its Vadi swar is Gandhar and the Samavadi is Nishad. The raga is highly versatile, serving as a canvas for profound emotional expression in Khayals, Dhrupads, and various semi-classical genres.
